It seems a good bill in theory, but the truth of the matter is that that history is written by the the winners. How can we explain our children what this country do to their native population? Or maybe slavery? or the Jim Crow's laws that existed in the South well into the late sixties?
I am kind of tired of some comments regarding the liberal agenda. What's the conservative agenda when it comes to American History? Teach our children that black people were enslaved because they are inferior to us?
The point of view of the Cherokee or Seminole native who saw their land and believes taken away by the white men would be different from the point of view of the Puritans who saw the natives as savages and Godless.
So if someone can explain what they mean by liberal views, I would like to know, be more explicit.

Just a suggestion Sah1 is for you ( and this is honesty not rudeness) to research the roles that other countries played in the Slavery system. In fact, Slavery was the key economical business in Africa especially on the Ivory Coast LONG LONG LONG before the mean wicked white man blessed them with their presence. In fact, Before explorers even set foot on those grounds African peoples from coast to coast (not all but many) were trading people for as small an item as a Cowry shell. Highly religious and priceless at that time but to us a mere shell. Which is why when explorers saw this system of trade they immediately cornered the market on Cowry collecting and transit and actually set the price values for said shells making the smaller of the shells actually worth MORE slaves because they were...duh easier for them to find/transport/trade! I'm sorry but in order to use something as an example you really need to know your stuff. You are a perfect example of why I worry about a nati

...nationally funded historic education. Nationally funded will put strict restrictions on what a teacher can and cannot teach and will result in standardized testing of said instruction in order to justify the funding and prove its validity. As a teacher and Historian I worry that I will not be able to share the truth with my students that History is not one sided and I worry that the books, facts, and documents needed to teach them this will be restricted. Liberal? By liberal I think many are referring to the tendency to see things from a cut and dry...black and white...extremes of the spectrum sort of view. In fact, just based on your claim of slavery alone to support your argument I was able to show you just ONE example of how your view is incorrect probably based on a truncated education of the truth. BTW those "native" Americans you mentioned also took on indentured servants and captured enemies and made them.. gasp and sigh SLAVES. But I'll leave that up to you to researc

I agree everyone should have a good working knowledge of American History, but have you read the history that our schools are teaching, most is incorrect and tend to lean towards liberal views. I would suggest reading your childrens history books along with them.

Regina I agree wholeheartedly. The fact that parents have to worry about false ideals and bias just to read books with their children makes me sad. But as a researcher and student myself I am always happy to have my husband play Devil's Advocate or even just point out flaws in what I'm reading/writing because that is how education works. Through discussion and reorganization of thoughts.

I firmly believe that each and every citizen should have a good working knowledge of American History, especially when it appears that so many voters seem to have forgotten important lessons learned by those who lived through the Great Depression. It is far better to learn about history through reading or from listing to those with valuable experience, rather than having to repeat the whole process.

Need to ensure they teach ACTUAL history and not some liberal agenda.

It's a good idea in theory, but the government is going to make it very bureaucratic and expensive and probably not improve anything. You can't force kids to learn by throwing money at schools.

Government Funding = HUGE BIAS and AGENDA being shoved down our kids throats. If the Government funds it the teachers will have an A to Z requirement of what they can and can't teach...I've taught for years in school systems with state and federal testing requirements.
Trust me.....this can't be good. From either a Republican or Demo or Lib or Conserv standpoint.
